the scenes, but as for publicly right now, melis melissa, the white house is not talking. president obama is basically launching this public campaign to pressure republicans. president obama came out on friday and urged them to get behind his plans. again today he sat down with david gregory, of course, during that exclusive interview on "meet the press" and urged republicans to act saying that it appears all they are interested in is protecting taxes for wealthy americans. republicans, by the way, lashed out at those comments saying the president seems more interested in placing blame instead of actually leading, but that at this point in time seems to be president obama's strategy to some extent, publicly pressuring republicans to act and to move on these negotiations. so that is where this stands right now. the white house monitoring everything that's going on the hill quite closely, but i can tell you, melissa, that there is a sense of optimism that is waning here at the white house. you can sense that when you talk to the officials here. >> well, the eternal optimist. vice president

are your morning headlines. president obama will meet with top congressional leaders at the white house this afternoon. 3:00 p.m. eastern in hopes of making progress on the fiscal cliff talks. in addition the house will be back in session on sunday. we've got more on all of this in a moment. while lawmakers have been preoccupied with the fiscal cliff, they've not dealt with passing a new farm bill. "the washington post" now reporting that unless one is passed by january 1st, the formula for establishing minimum milk prices would revert to the one that was in place back in 1949. the paper says that could boost milk prices more than $3 a gallon. we're going to get another read on the housing market recovery this morning. the national association of realtors is out with its pending home sales report for november. that's coming at 10:00 a.m. eastern time. looking for an increase of 1.5%. that follows a 5.2% rise in october. pending home sales, of course, a measure of home sales on home sale contracts signed but not yet out. >> a big deal. the milk. >> the milk thing could be huge. you think

obama, you could argue. it makes sense that he's serving as the president's proxy. this is something the president is engaged with. this is something the white house is very engaged with. he said yesterday he's optimistic that a deal can be struck. i think that's not surprising. that's what you'd expect to come from president obama. but we're also -- we sort of said tonight is the deadline and that's true because a lot of the tax cuts expire at midnight. the sense we're getting from a lot of sources and from members of congress is that perhaps tonight isn't a hard and fast deadline. mitch mcconnell and the vice president are negotiating in earnest to find a deal. but it's sort of difficult to see how exactly that may come to be by midnight and have votes in the senate and house. the thought is that going over the cliff gives cover for some democrats and certainly some republicans. there will be a lot more pressure after the cliff comes to be to put a solution in place. even after midnight were to come and go, we would see them wo working towards an agreement, e we would expect. >> po

of a compromise. their staffers on the phone into the early morning hours. folks here at the white house up quite late as well. so it looks like some type of compromise is starting to form that would include increasing taxes on those making $450,000 or less. remember president obama wanted that threshold at 250,000. house speaker john boehner wanted it much higher at about a million dollars. this is somewhere in between. also, an extension of the unemployment insurance benefits. they're still hashing out some of the final details but it does appear as though the vice president was key in helping these negotiations to move forward. >> the negotiations go on there, kristen, we are watching the senate floor as they discuss the very details of that and debate it. keith, to you on this. political pointing out, biden's inclusion sets up a good cop/bad cop xen arroyo here among the democrats with the vice president and senator harry reid, those particular characters if you will in these negotiations. and was said by kristen that vice president -- the vice president and mitch mcconnell spoke at 12:45 a.m
